2007 Brut Millesime, Alfred Gratien
Sparkling & Champagne
Tasting Note: Vintage Champagne from a respected estate, perfumed with toasted almonds, orange blossom and citrus zest, followed by a delicately textured mouthful of russet apples.
Food Matching: It pairs well with delicately fleshy, fairly firm, meaty fish such as sea bass, meagre drumfish, bonito varieties and red mullet.
Vineyard: Gratien owns just 1.5 hectares of vineyards, with the majority of their fruit fulfilled via long-term contracts with growers across a diverse set of Crus. All three of the major grape varieties are used, although the percentage of Pinot Meunier has been reduced over time. The grapes are picked and pressed near the vineyards, the musts are then transported to headquarters in Epernay, where they are placed into oak barrels and fermented.
Vinification: For all vintage champagnes, Alfred Gratien has always chosen natural cork for sealing the bottle during the second fermentation because its permeability favours a micro-oxygenation that is necessary for the evolution of the wine. Once bottled, vintage champagnes rest peacefully in the cellar for a minimum of 7 years. Grape varieties are vinified separately in 228 litre oak casks and no malolactic fermentation is carried out.
