We’re proud

to say

that our home-cooked Italian cuisine has filled the bellies of thousands, not just from the Steel City, but from the world over. We landed the Trip Advisor Traveller’s Choice Award for 2020 as well as winning ‘The Best Italian Restaurant’ in the Social Sheffield Awards. The mayor of the city visited us personally!

But things haven’t always gone plain sailing for us…

Our Story

It all started with a love story.

I’m Ester, and my partner Saverio and I have lived in England for almost 20 years. We were born and raised in Italy. I was happy there and forged a career as a respected chef in Naples. If I hadn’t have met Saverio and fallen in love, I don’t think I’d ever have left. I was scared about moving countries (especially because I spoke very little English), but Saverio was so enthusiastic about the whole idea. We could go, learn English, get some work experience and return home all the better for it. So off we went, a young couple in love with a thirst for experience and English adventure. When I hopped on that plane in 2002, I was under the impression I’d be returning home within a year.

.

But it didn’t turn out that way!

We started by scrubbing dishes in other people’s restaurants, with little money to our names but hope in our hearts. Saverio became a barista. I eventually got a job working in a kitchen. The work was exhausting, but we had a dream. We dreamed that one day, we’d open our own restaurant.

We’d call it VeroGusto–

translating as ‘The Real Taste’

I dreamed of opening my old, Italian recipe book and getting my hands dirty in the kitchen, preparing authentic Italian food for the people of Sheffield. Saverio would be mingling in front of house, smiling and serving delicious Mediterranean wines to our loyal customers, and we’d be so happy here in England…

…we just needed a lucky break.

There were many times we nearly gave it all up. But the more time we spent in England, the more we fell in love with the people. And the more deeply we fell in love with the people, the more motivated we became to bring authentic Italian food to the heart of Sheffield. So we stayed, determined that one day our dream would come true.

Eventually, it did.

The Birth Of VeroGusto

We went on to open the VeroGusto you know today in 2006, and our staff and loyal customers became like family to us. Our dream was coming true, just like we envisioned it. Once the restaurant got up and running (helped along by an amazing review by the one and only Martin Dawes, Sheffield’s infamous food critic), our family welcomed two new members! We became the proud parents of our two beautiful children, Francesco and Vittoria. (When we say we’re family-run, we mean it, as Francesco and Vittoria love nothing more than to chat away to our customers!)

We are truly proud of the food we serve

We’re truly proud of the food we serve, and we make sure that every single ingredient we buy is either local to Sheffield (like our meat and vegetables) or straight from Italy (like our fresh flour for our pizza dough). It’s important to us that our customers know that, along with 5* Italian hospitality, we have always put high-quality ingredients first on our priority list. As a chef, I know it makes the biggest difference, so I’m pretty picky when it comes to sourcing fresh food. You can take the girl out of Naples, but you can’t take Naples out of the girl!

So if you’re hungry for some real, Italian food that’s prepared with love

(along with a big, warm welcome)…

To all of our loyal customers and all of our new-friends yet to come…

Grazie, e arrivederci!
